OurHistory

Downs Baptist Church was founded in 1923, when a group of Christians began meeting in the Downs Hall. For a short time they also met in the local laundry, which led to a temporary building being created for the church on an adjoining plot.

In 1930 a piece of land was purchased for a new church building, which was dedicated in 1932. In 1991, however, the building became inadequate for the Church’s expanding activities, and we now meet in Woodingdean Primary School on Sunday mornings and Rudyard Kipling School on Sunday evenings, and use other buildings in the community during the week such as the Parish Room of the Holy Cross Church for Thursday Fellowship.

We currently have around 50 members, and are involved in many aspects of life in Woodingdean, such as running a greengrocers shop,  a community resource centre, and several groups for children and young people.

There is an initiative for a new building – keep an eye out on the home page for project updates.
